How we work

From first enquiry to findings

The scope depends on the estate jurisdiction, where research is needed, and the records available.

  1. Review the case

We ask about your role, where the estate is administered and what is already known. We confirm who can instruct us and whether the proposed research is feasible.

  2. Agree the work and fees

A fixed quote is our usual starting point for a defined search. Where the scope is uncertain, we may propose work in phases with a spending limit and written approval before a further phase. If a success-based fee is appropriate and permitted, the agreement sets out who pays, how the fee is calculated and when it becomes due.

  3. Research and verify

We look for relevant records and compare them with what is already known. Depending on the case, we may contact potential beneficiaries to verify information.

  4. Deliver the findings

We explain what the research supports, what remains unresolved, and which sources informed the findings. The estate representative handles the next legal and administrative steps.

What if Birchward contacted me first?

Birchward may identify a potential case independently and contact possible heirs by email. The verification page explains how to check that contact.
